Finishing a painting and sharing its process are different tasks. Krita’s September update closes one of the gaps between them for Android users.

Released on 15 September 2026, Krita 5.3.4 and 6.0.4 include fixes across the application. The headline addition is support for rendering animations and exporting recorder timelapses on Android. The release notes also list fixes for interrupted tool use while recording, exports with missing frames, and layer thumbnails under display scaling.

Which version is intended for working artists?

In this release announcement, the team identifies 5.3.4 as suitable for production work and describes 6.0.4 as more experimental because of its underlying Qt transition. Krita on Android remains a tablet-only beta; the announcement does not provide Android builds of 6.0.4.

Another compatibility change matters if you exchange files: the GIMP XCF import plug-in was removed because its unmaintained dependency had security problems. Check the current download page and release notes before choosing a version.

A timelapse is evidence of a process, not a shortcut through it

The recorder documentation explains that Krita captures snapshots as the canvas changes and later turns them into video. Its controls include capture intervals and image resolution; keeping snapshots also uses storage space. The manual distinguishes a timelapse from a speed painting: one compresses the recording, while the other limits the time spent making the art.

Our practical suggestion is to use a process video as a review tool before using it as promotion. Watch where you repeatedly repaint the same area, and ask what decision was still unresolved. A short caption explaining one of those decisions can teach a viewer more than a sequence of brushstrokes alone.

This is a release-note digest, not a hands-on performance test. The official announcement is the reference for version-specific Android support; older manual screenshots may show earlier export behaviour.
